August Favorites (2014)

Hi Guys! I am totes late on this post. I have had a hectic August to say the least, I just moved into a new place and the whole process was a pain in the butt. Finally getting settled in and hoping to watch some new movies. I feel like I haven’t been watching much movies lately with the move and with our fave rental store shutting down. Yes, you heard that right, I was still renting movies from a video store. I will sometimes order one through DirectTV or through Amazon Prime, but the place I used to go to was like $2.50 for new releases! I swear this guy had everything under the sun, but he decided to retire and my whole movie watching routine has been thrown off. Luckily, we have another local rental store nearby, I tended not to go there because they close early and it is run by these really old, grumpy people, but I think I may have to suck it up and go in there. Ok, feel free to make fun of me! Does anyone out there, I mean anyone, Bueller, Bueller, rent movies from a video store still?

Of course, I have not lost steam on my TV watching, so I have plenty of faves to report.

Ps… tomorrow I will be leaving for a mini-vaca to South Beach. Woo hoo, so excited and ready for some R&R and fun!

1. The Killing: Seasons 1-4
August should just be called The Killing month for me. I pretty much spent the past couple weeks binge watching this little gem on Netflix. I never caught it when it was on AMC, but I heard so many good things about it so I gave it a shot. I finished all four seasons and I have to say it was worth it. If you need a new show to watch and you enjoy crime dramas, then this would be perfect for you. Big thanks to Mesh for recommending this one. The show revolves around detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and  Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman), an unlikely pair that seem like opposites, but in reality are very much alike. The pair uncover and try to solve different murder investigations, while trying to keep their personal lives afloat.

Enos was so awesome in this show and I am definitely a newfound fan. Kinnaman was equally great and I cannot wait to see this Swedish actor break into more roles. He probably has the best lines in the whole show and I cannot get his voice saying “Linden” out of my head!

2. The Leftovers
At first I was on the fence about this HBO show. I wasn’t sure if I was all in, but after about 3 episodes I was hooked. Totally original and different and mind-bending, this show keeps viewers on their toes. When you realize that the show was co-created by Damon Lindelof, one of the guys behind Lost, then that helps you understand the weirdness and mystery behind the show. The story is centered in the town of Mapleton, New York, three years after an odd occurrence where people suddenly disappeared and were never seen or heard from again. They call this phenomenon the “departure,” similar to the biblical idea of rapture.

The people left behind are devastated to say the least and life as they know it, has been turned upside down. On top of this chaos, there is a group of people who dress all in white called the Guilty Remnants, seriously they look like they could work at The Cheesecake Factory, who do not speak, yet are spreading the idea that society should not forget about what happened in the world. Their presence is annoying and their cult-like behavior is so odd. The show centers around Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), his daughter Jill (Margaret Qualley) and his wife Laurie (Amy Brenneman) who has left them and joined the Guilty Remnants. There is a wide variety of actors on the show, since there are so many sub-stories going on at the same time, but overall a great cast. One of my faves has to be Carrie Coon who plays Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family and is angry and alone. If you liked the way Lost was formatted, then you will love this show!

3. Witches of East End: Season 2
Ok I know what you are thinking, who the hell watches this Lifetime show? Yes, me of course. I absolutely love this corny show and to everyone who is one the fence about it, you should just give it a shot. If you like shows about witchcraft and sexy guys, then this one is for you. The show revolves around the Beauchamp family of witches. Led by Joanna (Julia Ormond), she rallies with her sister Wendy (Madchen Amick) and her two daughters Freya (Jenna Dewan Tatum) and Ingrid (Rachel Boston) in trying to just get through daily life and fighting the issues of the witch world they left behind. The women have lived through centuries and have been reincarnated various times. We get lots of flashbacks which is always fun to watch. There is also a male family of witches, brothers Dash (Eric Winter) and Killian Gardiner (Daniel Di Tomasso) as well, and they interact with the ladies of the show.

4. The Real Housewives of Orange County
I know this is a horrible pick to admit to, but I tell the truth here on my blog. The Housweives franchise is my guilty pleasure and I have no shame in admitting I love watching this. LOL! The only one I won’t watch is the New Jersey ladies, I just can’t stand them, they are so annoying, more so than the others.

  1. Hey Queen Mel!! Looks like we both are going to our well-deserved vacay. South Beach eh? NICE! My hubby & I are flying to NYC Friday, hence my post today is NYC-inspired πŸ˜‰

Ahhhh you and your scary shows! I don’t think I can watch Leftovers, that sounds a bit too spooky for me. The Killing however sounds good! I like Joel Kinnaman from believe it or not, that Robocop remake, ahah. I’ve seen Mireille Enos in a few things and I really like her!

    1. Oh nice we will both be enjoying some vacation time and I bet sweating with this hot weather. It’s hot in SD right now, but I hear it is sweltering on the East Coast. How fun, I will go over and check out your blog today. What are you planning on doing in NYC?

Leftovers isn’t too scary, I think you could handle it. The Killing is awesome, that has more scare factor in it, but not too bad. You could handle it I think. You know what is weird, I thought to myself while watching it, I wonder if Ruth knows who Joel is? He is really GOOD, I hope to see him in more movies. I want to check out Robocop just to see him and if you liked it, then I definitely need to. πŸ™‚

      1. Oh NYC is only in mid 70s so not THAT hot. It’s perfect actually, I don’t like it when it hits above 80. I know I’m from a tropical Island but I actually don’t like hot/humid weather. That’s why I’m in Minnesota, ahah. We’re just gonna do some sight seeing and eat great food, that kind of stuff. I might see Les Miz, would u believe it I haven’t seen it before? It so happens that the actor playing Valjean is the same guy who played Phantom in Love Never Dies when I saw that on the West End in London a few years ago!

I might give The Killing a shot but you know me, I’m so bad w/ TV shows, I mean I haven’t picked up Downton again [yes I know, I know] Ahah well, watching a cute Euro actor made you think of me eh? Boy what reputation do I have, mwahahaha! Robocop has its haters but I wasn’t so in love w/ the original so I thought it was decent.

      2. Oh then not too bad! I thought it would be hotter. I heard South Beach is going to be really humid ugh! And it is really hot in San Diego right now I am over this heat. Where are you from?

That sounds like so much fun. I love New York, there really is no place else like it. I have never seen Les Miz either, I bet that is going to fantastic. You lucky duck!

Oh of course you know this! I have a thing for Swedes too, I am adding him to my list of new actors I like. I know you will never get around to watching TV stuff, but that is okay, we know our strengths and weaknesses. I have a hard time getting to a movie theater, so there’s my prob! I like to watch in the comfort of my house πŸ™‚ Have fun on your trip, we’ll catch back up when we are both back. Send me a pic on Twitter and I will too!

  2. I need to get back into the swing of watching TV shows! The Leftovers looks awesome, and I loved Lost so it bodes well. I reckon you might like this Danish/Swedish co-production called The Bridge. It’s kind of like The Killing but with more inventive violence!

    1. Hi Anna! Oh yes girl, you would like the Leftovers I think. It totally has a weird, mysterious element to it and I think you would enjoy it. I watch the Bridge right now too! Love it! You know my style. πŸ™‚

  3. Someone was just recommending The Killing to me today! Guess I should give it a whirl, huh? I need to get back on track with The Leftovers…and like a million other shows, but right now I’m slowly trying to catch up on Grimm, so there’s that. Lol. Never seen Witches of East End, but I’ve wondered about it. Seems like it might be kind of fun! I will admit that Lifetime kind of sucks me in sometimes. There was a Devious Maids marathon on one time and I could NOT stop watching…lol. As for the Housewives…I can’t. Just can’t. Bahaha. Nice round-up here, lady! Enjoy your vacay!!! πŸ™‚

    1. Hey girl hey! Oh yes watch the Killing, honestly I think you would like it. There’s something about that show that is really good, now that it is done with I actually miss it. That is always a sign of a good show. As the season progressed The Leftovers did get better, a weird show but it was fun to watch. But I definitely do not miss it, if that tells you something about it. I have never seen Grimm is it good?

Well I still haven’t gotten around to finishing Dr. Who, so yeah we are in the same boat. OMG agreed on Lifetime, I saw season of Devious Maids, so bad but it did suck me in that first season. If you like stuff about witches and you don’t mind a little corniness than you may like the Witches show. πŸ™‚

      1. Yeah I like Grimm quite a bit! Admittedly, season one is kind of bland, but season two cranks things up. I’m about halfway through season three, and I think it’s pretty good so far!

  4. Nice post Melissa! Two shows are starting in the UK this week so I might check them out: The Strain & The Leftovers. As for this question: “Does anyone out there, I mean anyone, Bueller, Bueller, rent movies from a video store still?” – Nope! I can’t. They’ve all shut down within I think a 100 mile radius of me. Not sure how many are left in the UK at all…

    1. Yeah no one does right, I am the only person out there who wants to rent an actual movie. LOL! It’s because I am an 80s child!

You must watch both of them, although I think you may like The Strain more than The Leftovers. Were you a Lost fan? The Leftovers can be odd, but I think it is worth watching and The Strain is fun, I am addicted to it! If you watch them, I would love to hear your thoughts!
